Club Captain: James Tibbott
Imperial Medicals RFC has established itself as a highly successful and thriving rugby club, with all standards of rugby being catered for – from purely social to elite. The immense feelings of unity and team spirit that exist amongst all our players and supporters, together with the unique “medicals” rugby atmosphere gives everyone an unforgettable experience, both on, and off the field.
Being a university club we play our BUCS fixtures on Wednesdays, where the medical students take to the field and currently compete at a very high level BUCS division 1A. On Saturday we put out 2 teams where we play sides, which are open to everyone, and we fully welcome anyone from any profession, or background to come and play for us and enjoy the atmosphere of the club. As a London Medical school side we are eligible to compete in the worlds oldest rugby competition, The UH Cup. Having enjoyed dominance for the past eight years, we were edged out last year, but thankfully the 3rd XV still managed to win theirs! This year there will be a massive focus on winning back those 2 trophies.
As with any successful club the social life of IMRFC is a big part of what makes the club special; we thoroughly enjoy ourselves off the pitch, whether it is in the Medical School Bar on a Wednesday night or the bright lights of West London on a Saturday. We run many social events during the year, such as the famous 3rd XV curry, a visit to the royal exchange and the traditional Medical School Christmas Bop. The highlight of the year is the annual Club Dinner held at the Royal Automobile Club on Pall Mall. During this splendid evening of entertainment we welcome a guest speaker, enjoy sumptuous food and award our Cockburn and Ian Kenyon Scholarships to both new and old members of the club.
We are a club that loves to tour. Every year we travel to another part of the UK for a few days to go on Schools’ Tour, where we welcome our new members to the club in a traditional Medical School manner. This tour aims to integrate our new members into the club and for them to make friends with the older lads. On arrival back in London the annual Inter-year match takes place at Teddington, where, amongst other things we witness the 1st years take on the 2nd years in front of a large crowd of the medical school. Over Easter weekend the club has its annual tour to Cornwall; a tour that has been enjoyed for over 83 years, and is arguably the oldest tour in the world! Here we play 3 competitive matches against local sides whilst also enjoying the glorious South-West of England and all it has to offer
Imperial Medicals RFC is looking forward to another immensely enjoyable and successful season in 2009-10; new members are very welcome, and will certainly not be disappointed. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or queries you may have.
