1st XV Match Report: Medicals still Top of the Table

The medics knew that the game could and probably should have been won, but the draw still sees them at the top of the BUCs table with only three fixtures remaining.

BUCS Imperial Medicals 15 – 15 Imperial College 27/01/10

On a crisp day, the medics arrived at Teddington knowing that this intracollegiate fixture would go along way to deciding the success of their season.

The opening exchanges were frustrating for the medicals as their early enthusiasm resulted only in acts of ill discipline which allowed the college to take a 3-0 lead. The college further extended their lead when they exploited a large blind side well from a scrum allowing their right wing to score (10-0). This sparked the medics into life and they began to show glimpses of the rugby which they are capable of, retaining possession well. At numerous points throughout the first half they came close to touching down, only the final pass was missing. From one such period of possession they forced a penalty which was cooly converted by Martin to bring the score to 10-3 at the interval.

The half time words focused around composure and patience. These were taken on board as the medics pack began to dominate proceedings. The lineout and scrum delivered more and more possession which resulted in infringements and territory. From a well formed lineout drive the medics were pulled down only yards from the line. Allowing Mowat to pick up from the base and force his way over. Martin converted to level the scores at 10-10.

Unfortunately the medics immediately suffered a demoralising lapse in concentration in the manner to which they are prone, allowing the IC outside centre to break numerous tackles to give the college field position which their lively scrum half used to dart over. Fortunately the attempted conversion hit the post and bounced down (15-10). With only fifteen minutes left the medics knew an almighty effort was required if the game was to be salvaged. The medics bravely elected to kick for the corner from a penalty which forced a scrum close to the college line. From this scrum-half Maynard made a trade mark break to score in the corner to level things.

In summary, the medics knew that the game could and probably should have been won. However a draw was a far superior result for the medics and leaves them at the summit of the BUCs table with only three fixtures remaining.
