Captains’ Message

Club Captain: Ruairidh Crawford

The Imperial Medicals RFC has established itself as a highly successful and thriving rugby club, with all standards of rugby being catered for. A strong unity and team spirit exists among the players, and combined with two superb coaches, a squad of highly motivated players play some fantastic and enjoyable rugby.

Being a university club we play our BUSA fixtures on Wednesdays, where the medical students take to the field. Our Saturday sides however are open to everyone, and we fully welcome anyone from any profession or background to come and play for us.

The social life of the club is important; we thoroughly enjoy ourselves off the pitch, and like to exchange some post-match banter with a couple of drinks at the Reynolds bar. We run many social events during the year, such as the famous 3rd XV curry night and the Rugby Club Bop. One of the highlights of the year is the Rugby Club Dinner at the East India Club in St. James’s Square. Here we welcome a guest speaker, as well as awarding the Cockburn Scholarship and many other prizes.

We are a club that loves to tour. Every year we go on Schools’ Tour, where for a few days in November we travel to a different city. This tour aims to integrate the new freshers into the club and for them to make friends with the older lads. On arrival back in London the annual Inter-year match takes place at Teddington, where we witness the 1st years take on the 2nd years. Over Easter weekend the club has its annual Cornwall tour, something that we have done for over 80 years. Here we play 3 competitive matches against local sides, as well as some golf and beach cricket.

Next July we have an international tour to South Africa. This tour is already being organised, and is the most talked-about event in this season’s calendar. We are scheduled to play 7 matches with 2 different teams, as well as promoting and coaching rugby in under-privileged areas of the country.

The Imperial Medicals RFC is looking forward to a fun and successful 2007-08 season; new members are very welcome, and will certainly not be disappointed. Please feel free to contact us with any more questions you may have.

First XV Saturday Captain: Austin Dekker

The 2006-07 season was a successful one for Imperial Medicals RFC, securing the United Hospital's Challenge Cup, the oldest rugby competition still in existence, and winning the JPR Williams Cup for the fifth time since its inauguration in 2003. Additionally, we were able to maintain our place in our Saturday league, London 3 North West, and the BUSA Premier South B division.

This season, for the first time, the role of 1st XV captain has been split between a student's BUSA captain and my role as Saturday league captain. In the past, many students have, for the majority of the season, had to play twice weekly, resulting in some tired bodies come March and April. Therefore, Imperial Medicals RFC has become a member of the RFU's Go Play Rugby player recruitment campaign with post-graduate students and non-medical players warmly welcomed into the club's Saturday sides.

As a club, we are fortunate to be coached by former Richmond and Irish Exiles coach Kevan Bell and England Universities Manager Keith Green. They manage to combine modern coaching methods with their own experience to ensure training sessions are both stimulating and inclusive for all.

With the Rugby World Cup and an international tour to South Africa in July 2008, the 2007-08 season will be an exciting time to be involved with Imperial Medicals RFC. Furthermore, the restructuring in the club, coupled with an influx of new players, should ensure we push for promotion in the Saturday league and are able to retain the United Hospitals Cup for the 7th consecutive year.

I look forward to meeting this year's freshers and any other new players at our up coming pre-season training sessions, the dates and times of which will be posted on the web-site, and wish everyone at the club an enjoyable and successful 2007-08 campaign.

Let's go out and make history.
